Teaching Anger Management and Emotional Control to Children

These days, anger management is a hot topic among educators. More and more, we see angry students committing acts of violence against classmates. Educating the public on the topic of anger management is the best way to help children manage their anger in an appropriate way.

What is anger?

Angry feelings are normal emotional reactions to daily stresses in our lives that range from irritated to enraged. It’s natural for children to experience emotions of anger but it’s critical to teach them proper coping mechanisms so that they do not express these feelings in an uncontrollable manner.

The goal as a parent is not to completely stop the angry emotion since they are hardwired into our brain. The goal is to teach the children to develop self-control and make appropriate choices regarding how to handle these feelings.

Strategies for teach children to handling anger appropriately

1. Lead by example – Research shows that children model their parents so if the parent blows up in fits of rage in front of a child. The child will learn to use anger as a coping mechanism for their situations in their lives.

2. Teach empathy and tolerance – Empathy is the ability to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. Children that understand the feelings of others deal better with disagreements with other children.

3. Remain calm – Yelling at angry children to control themselves will only increase the intensity of the outburst. Remaining calm yourself will assist the child caught by the anger bee.

4. Use positive self-talk – Teach children to stay in control by saying affirmations. Affirmations are simple positive messages that the child can say to themselves in stressful situations. For example, here’s a few that a child could learn: “Stop and calm down”, “Take a deep breath”, “Stay in control”, or “I can handle this”. Suggest a few to your child and practice it with them. The more you practice it with them the more likely they will use it during an anger driven situation.

5. Teach them deep breathing – During an angry episode, our breathing changes to quick short breathes. This breathing causes a cascade of physiological changes in our body that creates anger. By learning to controlled, deep breathing, children can short circuit the angry response. Teach your child to inhale to a 5 counts, then hold for a 2 counts, and exhale for a 5 counts. For young kids, I call this breathing exercise “Dragon’s breath”. Have them pretend that they are breathing out fire with the exhale and that the fire is the anger leaving the body.

6. Identify anger triggers – Most children respond to specific triggers that cause anger. Ask your child “What situations make you angry?” The answer will vary from frustrations over homework to bullying at school. Then, talk about solutions that are more appropriate to the problem situation. You can even rehearse the scenario by role-playing.

7. Watch for the warning signs – When anger starts to arise, they will show signs. Tell your child that it’s important to listen to the warning signs. Ask your child what the specific warning signs that show that they are getting upset. Some examples of signs could be talking louder, heart pounding, face getting red, clenching fists, or breathing faster. Once you identify the signs, start pointing them out when they show signs of getting upset. For example, “I see your breathing fast” “Looks like you are getting anger” “You’re clenching your fist. Are you getting upset.” This self-awareness will snap the child back into reality and help them manage the anger early – before it’s out of control.

The secret to successful anger management is to intervene early. Most children use anger because it is their only coping mechanism for daily stress. By identifying problem situations and providing them new techniques for coping, you will keep the anger bee from grabbing hold of your child.

Enrich Your Baby’s Mind During Bath

Every moment is a possible opportunity for learning. When it’s play time, there are endless possibilities for you to help your baby enrich his mind with toys and games that will hone a variety of skills. But even though it’s just down time or you’re engaged in another activity, let’s say, like taking a bath, it still holds vast opportunities for his mind to be stimulated.

So how do you enrich your mind during bath time?

First off, before undressing your child for the bath, introduce him first to the objects around him especially the bath things that you’re going to use to bathe him such as soap, shampoo, sponge, bath tub and so on. Tell him about the uses of these things, “this soap will clean your body while the shampoo will wash your hair.” This is instrumental in his language development and broadening of his knowledge about the things around him.

Next, you can talk to him about the things you’re doing while bathing him. Say things like “Let’s go wash this cute little head of yours” or “I’m now soaping your hands, now your arms and then your shoulders!” By doing this, you’re acquainting your baby with his different parts of the body. For now, he may not show signs that he understands you or he may not yet distinguish what his hands are and what his feet are but eventually, it would be much easier for him to point out his body parts when he’s a little older. This is also good in terms of widening his vocabulary and concepts.

Make him listen to music while you bathe him. Music has always been known to be an effective stimulant of a baby’s brain. This is why pregnant mothers make the babies inside their tummies listen to classical music. Why not do the same now that he’s already here in the outside world? Play classical, upbeat, pop music and expose him to a wide variety of melodies and tunes that will stimulate his mind.

It’s also a good idea to sing to him. Your baby loves to hear your voice and singing to him will also delight him while at the same time enhance his auditory perception and help in his language development. So it doesn’t matter whether you’re in tune or out of it, sing like crazy as you bathe your baby and watch him burst into a fit of giggles.

Engage him to play with bath toys that are not only created as a diversion for your kid during bathing but are also designed to incite your baby’s creativity and imagination. A Baby Einstein Hippo Bath Puppet for example can be used for bath time imaginative plays while keeping him occupied as you get done with your baby cleaning job.

It’s true that every single day of your child’s life holds endless chances for learning. Don’t miss any of these opportunities to help develop your child’s mental capacity especially those that come during daily activities such as bath time.

Causes of Bed Wetting: Eat, Drink, and Wet the Bed

Well, we're on a roll with causes of bed wetting theories. Here's one that seems to make sense. I'm still pretty much sold on the idea that it's a hereditary issue - but it seems like if there are other causes of bed wetting, they may be more controllable. If it's just heredity, you kind of have to wait it out until your child reaches the pre-set magical age of dryness. By nature not especially patient, the idea of waiting it out doesn't appeal to me.

So, here's what I've learned about the food and drink leading to bedwetting theory.

Chocolate

Oh no! Say it isn't so! Well, actually it's not necessarily the chocolate; it's the caffeine in chocolate that may cause bed wetting. What does caffeine do? It stimulates the body, including the bladder. So that evening cup of cocoa or slice of chocolate cake may be a problem. (Gosh, now I'm craving chocolate!)

Soda

Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles. Carbonation is rumored to do strange things to immature bladders. Actually, for any adults who drink soda, you know first-hand that a can of Coke is a ticket to the restroom. It's an effect that's compounded by caffeine - and the sugar's probably not helping matters either.

Oranges and Grapefruits

OK, if you've actually got a child who will eat grapefruit, I'd like to hear about it! But oranges are another story. I get a strange reaction when I eat oranges (and raw cranberries for some reason) - my face gets hot and I feel kind of funky. So, I'm assuming it's possible to be allergic to citrus. The citric acid is the most likely culprit. Try cutting back on the orange juice and citrus in your child's diet to see what happens.

Spicy Stuff

There are some spices out there that could probably be rated pharmaceutical grade. Think of the effect Chinese mustard has on your nose! No doubt some of these spices have an equivalent effect on the bladder. Salsa, Asian food, and other hot, hot, hot foods may be contributing to the bedwetting problem.

Food Allergies

I've heard of people whose children are allergic to everything from eggs to wheat, and have to say that dealing with bedwetting is nothing compared to the trouble they have to go through just to feed their children. Couple a serious food allergy with bedwetting, and it's enough to make you want to retreat to the bath tub for the next ten years! Some allergies cause bladder spasms - which of course, means a bedwetting accident. It's not just food, either. Some people are really sensitive to preservatives, dyes, and other additives. It doesn't seem that the only effect of a food allergy would be bedwetting, though. So don't throw out all your groceries just yet. But if your child has multiple challenges, it's something to consider. You may have to shop around for an allergist - so be prepared.

So what do you do if you discover your child's bedwetting problem is caused by a food sensitivity? It's not like being allergic to a cat - get some shots or send Fluffy to live with Grandma. You'll have to enroll your child's compliance on this (so what else is new?). Get your child to see the value, the what's-in-it-for-me of staying away from what may be a favorite food. Dry nights are pretty valuable - and your child may come to see the tradeoff as worthwhile. The sensitivity may be temporary, too - and that should help.

After all, just the thought of never being able to eat chocolate is cruel and unusual punishment.

How to Choose a Baby Name

Your new baby needs a name to begin his journey into life. Read about the serious business of choosing the right name for your baby.

Getting ready to bring a new baby into the world involves a lot of preparatory work. Your baby needs his own clothes, accessories, toiletries, toys, etc. One of the most important requirements though is his own name. Your baby's name will identify him in a crowd and be a word which he will associate himself with for the rest of his life. Your child will not choose his own name. You, as his parent, will select it for him. With such an important decision to make for your child, deciding on a name for your baby should take into account the following factors.

Uniqueness:

Would you like your child to have a rare and unique name? Remember that this name will then make him stand out in a crowd. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. He will easily recognize when he is being called. At the same time, rare and complicated names have immense potential for misunderstandings and mistaken pronunciations. Teachers and caregivers may unintentionally mangle your child's name if they have difficulty speaking it aloud.

At the same time, do not give your child a name that is too common. Varsha regrets the name she gave to her son Anil. There were five boys with the same name in her son's class at school. Everyone kept getting confused. For the entire year, her son would proudly introduce himself as Anil B whenever he met someone. Even at home, he would only respond if she called him by the same name.

A good tip is to go for a blend of rare and common names. If you have a common surname, consider giving your child a slightly unusual name to make it easier for him in school and later on, at the workplace. On the other hand, if your surname is uncommon, give your child a reasonably well known name.

Heritage:

Your baby's ancestry and religion is a big part of who he is. Many parents name their child keeping these parameters in mind. It is perfectly all right to choose to name your child after a god or religious figure. Many religions also have guidelines as to how to go about naming your baby. Sometimes, you may like a name that does not fit into the traditional category. Do not be disheartened. Perhaps you can use it as a middle name. Another trend that is catching on is to name a baby based on Numerology. This is believed to help the child achieve success as he becomes older.

Many families also follow a tradition of naming children after elderly or recently deceased members of the family. Some people also tend to name the first-born son after his father and then suffix the name with 'Junior'. This creates a potentially confusing situation in the home. Merely calling your child Junior may seem fine at first but is that what you want him to be known as when he is thirty years old? It goes for choosing names of elderly family members. Your child will have to bear the brunt if you decide to stick him with a name that went out of vogue over fifty years ago.

Memories:

Some names may be associated with bad memories. Hence, it is best to avoid using them for your child. The name you select may be a nice name but if you had a nasty colleague with the same name, think twice. Are you going to be reminded of him every time you call out to your child? If there is a possibility of that happening, then discard the idea of using that name. Both parents must agree on this subject. If either parent is uncomfortable with a potential name, drop it. At the same time, do not press your partner for an explanation as to why he does not like the name.

Do not be browbeaten by other people when it comes to choosing your baby's name. After all, you are the child's parents. Ultimately, it is up to you and your spouse to choose a name that both of you are happy with.

Raise Your Kids Right

To Get What You Expect

Your parenting style is the most likely way you will impact how your child grows up. In being responsive to your children, you are simultaneously setting clear rules and limits for your children. This is crucial for you as a parent. You have likely based on this, identified the four main styles of parenting. There is no “right” or “wrong” parenting style and more to the point, there is more than one right way, though we all have prejudices on what we think works best based on our own life experience and values. Research, however, has charted the effects of the various parenting styles on children:

Just do it or else!

Many parents adopt a highly authoritarian, dictatorial style of parenting. They expect children to simply obey orders with no questions. Rules typically are well defined in such households and breaking those rules ultimately invites punishment. This type of system is highly typical in societies where little to no change is expected and deviance from this normal behaviour can be quite costly such as in rural or agrarian society.

Children that have grown up in this type of emotional environment tend to show average performance in school but lack spontaneity, effective social skills, and self-confidence.

A no means a no

Other parents are firm, assertive, and authoritative without being overly authoritarian. They set very clear rules, and are firm about the discipline without using any harsh punishment. Children in such homes are expected to be are typically are, socially responsible.

Children, who are brought up in this type of emotional environment tend to become more responsible. They highly capable and easily adjust to situations that demand cooperation.

Do anything you want

Parents engaging in this style of parenting believe in the permissive or indulgent approach. They demand very little responsible behaviour and frequently avoid confrontation with their children. This style was more popular with parents in the 50s and 60s.

Children who are brought up in this type of emotional environment tend to be more creative but some research indicates they may develop behavioural problems as they grow up because they tend not to accept responsibility.

I don't care what you do

Very rarely parents remain uninvolved in their children’s lives, which can in many cases, border on neglect.

Children who are brought up in this type of emotional environment tend to perform poorly at school and frequently engage in criminal behaviour.

Tips On Buying Products For A New Born Baby

We all want the best for our babies, and if you are having your first child, you will probably be even more prone to buying the most expensive items, which you may never use. A classic example of this is a special airlock diaper bin you can buy for around $100/£50. At first glance this may seem like an essential purchase when in fact, for a mere 16 cents/32p, you can buy a pack of 100 diaper bags which can then be easily disposed of.

Another consideration is when you are buying essentials like diapers, tissues and the like, do you go for the cheaper products or is that false economy. Well, as for tissues, we can tell you that if you are using them for wiping/drying after changing the baby, it's better to use the cheap supermarket tissues as they are tougher and less likely to tear if wet. The more expensive tissues are softer and more suitable for wiping the nose.

Concerning diapers, it's a bit more complicated. Yes, the cheaper ones will ultimately do the same job, but because the system for keeping the wetness away from the baby's skin isn't as good, you may find the baby will be more prone to rashes, which means using more cream…and spending more money. Another problem is the cheaper diapers can leak during the night which will result in more sleepless nights. In our opinion, if you can afford it, go for one of the leading brands.

Another example where you may want to avoid the cheapest route is bottle sterilizers. At first we used a container where you soaked the bottles in a solution of water and purifying tablets. We found that it could cause the bottles to smell like chlorine and also, after a while, it could affect your hands and make them dry, even bleed. Using a steamer type sterilizer was quicker, easier and kinder to your hands. It does cost a bit more but you will be using it every day for months and months to come.

Talking of essentials, the kind of items mentioned above would be ideal gifts to give at a baby shower (a party where gifts are given to a parent or baby). Sometimes people spend lots of money on elaborate gifts which may never get used.

If you know anybody who has recently had a child then it is really worth asking about their experiences with various products, your parents may also be a good source of information. You will find that you may get many different options, they may not all be right for you, including some of them in this article but you will at least have a range of options and you can make the decision you feel is best for you and your baby.

Children’s Furniture: Must-haves For Your Kid’s Bedroom!

The bedroom is a place of sanctuary for most children. It can be a place where they can think freely, explore their creativity, discover hidden talents, read, or listen to music. That’s why, as a parent, it’s important to choose children’s furniture that your child can totally make use of.

Maximizing Space and Imagination

Make use of every bit of space available in the bedroom. Children love to store a lot of stuff, so there should be a place available for all your child’s knick knacks. Setting up a shelf or toy storage while maximizing space will ensure that your child’s bedroom is safe and comfortable.

Imagination is the element that will make your child’s bedroom fun and cheerful. You’ll be amazed at how your child can help if you’re lacking in this area. Let him or her describe the preferred colors, themes, and designs. Once you get the idea, finding the right children’s furniture and other decorations your child prefers should be easy.

More Than Just A Bedroom

Because we’ve established that children do more than just sleep in their rooms, you should consider buying children’s furniture that will fully support your kid’s activities.

Most children enjoy drawing and coloring or playing with dolls or action figures. Set up an activity area where your child can comfortably get into the action. Educational rugs or play mats are ideal for this part of your child’s bedroom.

If your child loves books, then setting up a reading nook is the way to go. This area needs to be inviting and comfortable. Provide a cozy chair or a soft rug and overstuffed pillows. Make sure that the lighting in this area is ideal. Keep a book shelf within your child’s reach.

Provide a shelf or cabinet that will serve as a display area. Your child will be able to show-off artwork and favorite pictures. This could also be a place to where trophies, collectibles, and other memorabilia are placed.

Hassle-free Storage Solutions

Keeping children’s bedroom clutter-free is a challenge every parent must face. It’s just a matter of finding a storage solution that is convenient for you and your child. In order to prevent children from just shoving everything under their beds when asked to clean their rooms, the arrangement below could work wonders:

1. Install a corkboard for photographs and artwork.

2. Provide a cabinet for display items. You can opt to have one built-in or you can pick a good one in children’s furniture stores.

3. Place attractive wicker baskets in corners where your child can dump his or her toys, books, and dirty clothes.

4. A roomy closet is recommended for easy storage of your child’s clothes, shoes, and sports gear.

Useful Tips When Out Furniture Shopping

Don’t immediately purchase an item that catches your or your child’s eye. Children’s furniture should be durable and can withstand a child’s constant flow of activity. So make sure you check the credibility of the manufacturer and the kind of material a particular desk or chair is made of.

Don’t give in right away to whatever your child wants. Consider the space of the bedroom as opposed to the gigantic shelf your kid is pointing at. You also need to determine how often your kid will be using a particular piece. When your decision is a no, make your child understand why.

Before going shopping, check out magazines and the Internet for photographs and decoration schemes. This will provide you a clearer view of what you want to get.

Buy at trusted children’s furniture stores. Do your homework and compare prices in advance to get the best deal. After all, you only want nothing but the best for your child.

How Children Benefit From Pretend Play Kitchen, Stores, And More

Once upon time, you may have worn your mother’s favorite apron while arranging miniature tea sets on a tiny table, serving imaginary tea and scones to your favorite doll. Or you may have been in command of your action figures, leading them to the battlefield in the center of your living room.

The character you were playing when you were young - a chef in a play kitchen or a general in the Stars Wars of your imagination – are still perhaps being played by many children nowadays. Pretend play is such a source of joy that even with the advent of so many modern games, this old-fashioned imaginative play never loses its appeal.

Promoting Pretend Play

Because of the many benefits it can give, children should be encouraged to engage in pretend play. But never impose the idea or it will lose its appeal. Here are some scenarios for starting a pretend play:

- If you see your little girl constantly dressing up her doll, ask her where her dolly is off to and maybe it’s better for little dolly to have something to eat in the play kitchen before taking off.

- When your little boy is playing with his action figures, comment on how the little ones need the guidance of a teacher or the care of a doctor.

- If your child pretends to be a wild animal ready to pounce on you, go along with it. You can act scared at first and then pretend to tame him by giving imaginary food and petting him on the head.

As children warm up to the idea of role playing, whoever’s babysitting would usually be assigned a role. It may seem ridiculous for a grown up like you to assist in a play kitchen or act as the customer in a lemonade stand the size of your arm. But the benefits it can bring to your child won’t make it so ridiculous anymore.

Benefits of Pretend Play

Social and Emotional Development - Children can become whoever they want to be in pretend play. Because of this, they are able to get a very basic view of how it’s like to be a doctor with his toy hospital or how it’s like to be a chef with her play kitchen. As kids act out the part of somebody else, empathy is planted. When children realize they can be any character they want to be, their self-confidence could grow. And with this comes the desire and strength to explore new things.

Mental Development - Even if it’s just child’s play, there are also many problem-solving situations that children encounter during role playing. It may be a concern on what material should best replace a lost play kitchen spoon or who among the action figures to pick as the second in command. The process of looking for solutions to obstacles develops the analytical skills of your child. It also promotes resourcefulness, creativity, abstract thinking and logical reasoning.

Communication - Whether children are playing with their parents, playmates, dolls or imaginary friends, they will always engage in conversation. A child starts to learn the importance of communication, especially when he or she mimics grown-up talk and actions. When children pretend to read to their dolls or write down grocery lists, they may be motivated to start learning how to read and write.

So encourage your child to pretend play. You can start off by presenting a play kitchen or a doctor’s kit. Remember, the skills that your child learns here are the skills that matter in real life.

Mac Games

Do you have a mac computer? If you do then you probably had difficulties in finding mac games. There are some sites which offer you games for your mac, but this site is really great. Check it out if you don't believe me.

If you go to the site you will see that there are plenty of games that you can choose, such as magic stones, supernova, the goalkeeper, boxing manager and many more. Since I am a football fans I would like to give a review about "The GoalKeeper".

Have you ever wondering what it's like to be a goalkeeper just like Edwin Van Der Sar, Gianluigi Buffon or Peter Chech? Do you what these men have to trained to be a top class keeper? You can stop wondering because the simulation game is here. Create your own goalkeeper and choose between handling, reflexes, jumping and charisma skill where you want to be expert at. You can even change your appearance. Satisfy with your looks, now choose your starting team from 6 different leagues: England, Italy, Spain, France, Germany and Netherland.

Now the most important thing in the game is the training feature. For training you will be given a number of training points to be distributed among handling, reflexes, jumping and charisma. For each training it will deduct your overall training points so be wise in using them. Another important aspect of the game is the contract feature. In this part of the game you can choose the way you act towards your team, decide if you want to stay or move, you can even use some prestige points to talk to your coach so you can improve your reputation with him. If you have higher reputation it will give you greater chances to be on the field on the next game.

For the match itself, well probably could be made better because you won't see yourself playing as other games would. Here you can only find stats between the two teams, thus you will have to listen to the commentary to get a description of what's going on. When the opponent tries to score you will be given three options, Arcade Save where you will have to catch the ball with your mouse, Strategy Save where you have to choose between three available save options, and Instant Save where it will be calculated instantly as the name suggests.

The game itself is available for not just Mac OS X but also Windows 95/95/ME/2000 or XP. Payment method available are credit card, Paypal, Switch/Solo, Deutsche Bank (Wire Transfer) or Mail/Fax. What are you waiting for, get on the action and be the best goalkeeper in the world!
